How to Register a Car From Abroad in Tenerife
If you’re planning to stay in Tenerife long-term, bringing your own car can be a great choice – you’ll save on rental fees, have the convenience of your own car, and don’t have to adapt to public transport schedules. However, without registration, a car brought from abroad can only stay on the island for 6 months. Should you exceed this period, you will need to register the car and obtain Spanish number plates. In this article, we’ll take you step by step through the whole process so you know what to expect, what to look out for, and how to save yourself time and potential worries.
Step 1 – Obtaining Ficha Tecnica Reducida
The first step in registering a vehicle in Spain is to obtain a Ficha Técnica Reducida – a technical document containing the detailed specifications of the vehicle. This document is made by an accredited technician and includes information such as dimensions, power, engine capacity, emissions, tyre specifications or vehicle weight.
What is the purpose of the Ficha Técnica Reducida?
This document is used to verify the technical characteristics of the vehicle when registering it in Spain. It is used by technicians at the ITV (Inspección Técnica de VehÃculos) to confirm that the vehicle meets the required standards.Â
How to get Ficha Técnica Reducida?
The easiest way is to request the Ficha Tecnica Reducida online through accredited experts who will issue it based on the vehicle details. Once you have it, you can proceed to the next step – a technical check at ITV.
Important: As with all official matters in Spain, you will need an NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero), i.e. a foreigner’s identification number, to get your car registered. In addition, you must also have an empadronamiento which is a certificate of residence.
Step 2 – Technical Inspection at ITV
Once you have the Ficha Técnica Reducida, the next step is to visit ITV (Inspección Técnica de VehÃculos). Here, a thorough technical inspection of the vehicle will be carried out to check its condition and suitability for use on Spanish roads.
How to do this?
First, you need to make an appointment at the nearest ITV station. In some regions, appointments can be made online, while in others it is necessary to attend in person. If the technicians find faults with the car, these will need to be corrected and the check will then be carried out again.Â
Once the inspection has been successfully completed and all requirements have been met, you will receive a Spanish technical certificate which confirms that the vehicle has passed the technical inspection and can proceed with the registration process.
Step 3 – Payment of Import and Road Tax
Once you have passed the technical inspection at ITV, you must pay two important taxes related to the registration of your vehicle in Spain.
Import tax (Tasa de Importación) – This tax must be paid at the financial office. To pay, you must first make an appointment to do so here.Â
Road Tax (Impuesto sobre VehÃculos de Tracción Mecánica) – After paying the import tax, the next step is to visit the municipal authority (Ayuntamiento) in your place of residence. Here they will calculate the amount of road tax and issue a receipt for payment. This tax must then be paid every year.Â
Both of these taxes must be paid before you can proceed to register your vehicle with the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) and obtain Spanish registration plates.
Step 4 – Registering the Vehicle With the DGT
After paying the above taxes, the final step of the process is the registration of the vehicle with the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico). This office is responsible for registering vehicles and issuing new Spanish registration plates.
The DGT tends to be busy, so it is essential to book your appointment early and expect longer processing times.Â
What happens at the DGT?
The office will keep the small technical license from your country of origin and issue you a document with which you can go and get your Spanish plates made. Usually, ,you can get them made on the spot.
Once the plates are ready, you can attach them, and your vehicle is officially registered in Spain!
Other Useful Tips:
Arranging third-party insurance
Once you have registered your car in Spain, don’t forget to arrange third-party insurance. The easiest option is to take out insurance directly with your Spanish bank, such as CaixaBank, Santander, and others, which often offer favorable terms for their clients.
Alternatively, you can use an insurance comparison website where you can find quotes from different insurers, often at better prices. Choosing the right insurance depends on your needs – some insurers offer basic compulsory liability insurance, others offer collision insurance with extended coverage.
How long can you drive in Spain without registering your car?
If you bring a car from your home country, you can drive it for up to 6 months with its original registration plates. However, it is important to keep proof of arrival in Tenerife (for example, a ferry ticket) so that if you are checked, you can prove when the vehicle arrived on the island.
What happens if you overstay the allowed time?
The police or the Guardia Civil have the right to seize the vehicle if you cannot prove that you have not overstayed the 6 months allowed. In this case, you will have to pay possible fines, towing, and storage fees.
The vehicle can only be recovered if all fees associated with the offense are paid and it is also ready to be taken to an ITV station to start the registration process. In some cases, import duties or other taxes may also have to be paid if the authorities decide that the vehicle has been in the country illegally for too long.
Registering your car in Tenerife is an important process to follow if you want to use your car legally in the long term. Particularly here, where it is easy for the police and the relevant authorities to track the length of time a vehicle has been on the island, it is not worth risking fines or even having your car impounded.
