Ifonche – Untouched Nature and a Paradise for Hiking

Surrounding the village of Ifonche in the south of Tenerife you will find a picturesque landscape with hiking trails that offer spectacular views of dramatic rock formations, volcanic landscapes and lush vegetation typical of this part of the island. Wandering the trails here is the perfect way to escape the busier parts of Tenerife and discover the authentic beauty of the island. What’s more, you’ll encounter a fascinating combination of history, geology and traditional Canarian surroundings. If you are looking for a place that combines adventure with tranquillity and nature, Ifonche will not disappoint.

Village of Ifonche

The settlement of Ifonche y Benitez is located at 1040 metres above sea level in the south-west of Tenerife and consists of just a few houses of the locals scattered around the area. The name Ifonche comes from the Guanche word for a frown or grimace made by wrinkling the nose. It was the Guanches, the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands, who lived in this area. Today, the village is known for its agricultural tradition. Here you will find the only restaurant, El Dornajo, located at the crossroads of several trails. For this reason, Ifonche is a popular starting point for hiking.

The Most Famous Historical Trail – the Camino de Ifonche

This traditional trail PR-TF 71.2 connects the village of Ifonche with La Quinta and offers an unforgettable experience for nature, history and adventure lovers. The route is 6.4 kilometres long and takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete. With an elevation gain of 523 metres uphill and 627 metres downhill, it is suitable for both experienced hikers and more experienced recreational hikers.

A Route With a Story and a Charming Landscape

The Camino Ifonche is not only a hiking route, but also a journey into history. It passes through an area with an exceptional ethnographic, natural and landscape heritage. It is no coincidence that the trail passes through three protected natural areas (the Barranco del Infierno Special Nature Reserve , the Ifonche Protected Landscape Area and the Corona Forestal Natural Park), which protect both the unique fauna and flora and the landscape features unique to this part of the island.

The route starts in the village of Ifonche, which it connects with the village of La Quinta. On the Camino Ifonche you will pass by a number of interesting places, including small settlements and terraced farmland. The landscape here combines untouched nature and human constructed landscapes, creating a unique harmony.

Barranco Del Infierno and Other Interesting Spots Along the Way

One of the most impressive parts of the Camino Ifonche is its proximity to the Barranco del Infierno gorge. This gorge, which is known as ”Hell’s Gorge”, is one of Tenerife’s most famous natural landmarks. During your journey you will enjoy breathtaking views of this dramatic landscape, which makes a great photo setting.

Another attractive stop is the junction at El Aserradero, where the Camino Ifonche meets the Camino de Teresme. This was of vital importance to the people of Tenerife, facilitating the movement of people and allowing the exchange of products between the coastal area and the inland.

From this junction, you can continue towards Adeje or, in the other direction, La Quinta. This option extends the route’s potential for further adventure and discovery.

Other Trails With Starting Point in Ifonche

From Ifonche to Vilaflor

Ifonche is not only the starting point for the Camino Ifonche, but also a place from where you can head out on other wonderful hikes. One of these is the GR 131 trail that takes you from Ifonche to Vilaflor. This well-marked route takes you through forests and ravines to Vilaflor, from where it continues around the Pico del Teide. The town of Vilaflor, with a population of almost 2,000 inhabitants, lies at an altitude of 1,414 metres and is famous for its Pino Gordo pine, the tallest and widest tree in the Canary Islands.

Vilaflor offers a pleasant way to relax – there are restaurants, hotels and a bus stop where you can return to Ifonche. However, for those who have the energy, we recommend the circular route, which will take you back to Ifonche by a different route. This route is shorter and takes you first on wider roads and later on narrower paths down through fields and pine forests. However, be prepared for the last part of the descent to be a little confusing as the path is not always clearly marked.

During the hike, you will not only enjoy the views of isolated farmhouses and fruit and wine fields, but also the beautiful pine forests that are typical of this part of the island. This trail is ideal for hikers looking for tranquillity and a unique view of Tenerife’s natural beauty.

From Ifonche to Roque de los Brezos and Roque Imoque

You can also take the GR 131 trail south from Ifonche. This section is one of the more challenging but offers a unique experience.

The path passes by iconic rock formations called “roques”, among which the Roque Imoque and Roque de los Brezos stand out. The route continues to the Fuente de las Pilas spring and the Barranco del Rey waterfall, which gives the area an unforgettable atmosphere.

With a length of 5.6 km and an average time of 1 hour and 50 minutes, this is a circuit that will be appreciated by experienced hikers looking for a physical challenge as well as the tranquillity and beauty of nature.
